YouTube on Monday shut down six far-right channels for violating rules against “dominationist” content when booting videos by David Duke, Stephen Molenquiam and Richard Spencer.
The video sharing platform pulled the plug on the channels as pressure was mounting on online social media platforms to crack down on hateful rhetoric.
YouTube responded to the AFP investigation about the move, saying, “We have strict policies to prevent hate speech on YouTube, and any channel repeated or indifferently violates those policies.”
The spokesperson said that a year earlier, after better directing Supreme Court content, YouTube saw a five-fold spike in video removal and ended more than 25,000 channels.
YouTube said that the channels removed on Monday include Duke, Molennex, Spencer and American Renaissance.
According to the Google-owned video platform, all terminated channels broke YouTube rules, saying that members of protected groups were inferior to others.
Some nixed channels also violated rules against linking YouTube videos to hateful content hosted elsewhere on the Internet, the company said.
Spencer confirmed the suspension of his account in a tweet that included a message from YouTube citing policies that glorify or incite violence against a person or group.
In a video posted on Twitter, Molennax stated that his offerings on YouTube were erased, saying the action was inappropriate.
“The allegation in general is that I am eradicating violence and hatred, which is not true at all,” Molinec said in the video.
“It’s a huge shock.”
The YouTube takedown came as Reddit used the platform as part of the crackdown on hate posts in popular online bulletin boards by President Donald Trump supporters, and the game streaming platform Twitch suspended the president for some time.
According to “r / The_Donald” Reddit, tightening the rules on a news-centric social website was prohibited among some 2,000 forums or “subreddits”.
Reddit said that for a long time Trump’s subset has “consistently hosted and instigated above-average rule-breaking content, killed us and other communities, and its (intermediaries) our most basic expectations.” Has refused to meet. “
Reddit’s new content policy specifically bans the promotion of incest based on identity or vulnerability, and calls to make posts personal and authentic to prevent spam.
“All communities on Reddit must follow our content policy,” Reddit said.
“We banned r / The_Donald because they haven’t done so despite every opportunity.”
Amazon-owned Twitch said Trump’s channel was suspended for violating the rules and that objectionable content was removed.
A spokeswoman said, “Disgusting conduct is not allowed on Twitch.”
“We do not make exceptions for political or newspaper content, and will take action on content we mention that violates our rules.”
Trump has complained that Silicon Valley platforms are biased against conservatives, despite having large social media of their own.
